Plot Summary
While fleeing the turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars in Europe to settle in New Guinea, a Swiss family from Bern—Father, Mother, and their three sons, Fritz, Ernst, and Francis—sets sail across the ocean. However, a ferocious storm combined with an attack by aggressive pirates drives their vessel far off course. The crew abandons the ship, leaving them trapped aboard as the ship runs aground on a jagged reef near an unfamiliar tropical shore.
Rather than giving up, the family pulls together. Utilizing makeshift rafts constructed from wooden barrels, they salvage everything they can from the wreckage: tools, livestock, weapons, gunpowder, and basic supplies. Upon landing, they quickly realize they are stranded on a wild, uninhabited island. To protect themselves from dangerous creatures and unpredictable weather, Father and the boys design a magnificent multi-level treehouse built high inside a massive banyan tree, complete with functional running water and rustic furnishings.
As time passes, the Robinsons transform the island into a vibrant haven, learning to tame local animals such as zebras, ostriches, and elephants. However, the outside world eventually finds them. During a scouting expedition around the coast, the two older brothers, Fritz and Ernst, spot a crew of pirates who have captured a merchant vessel. Risking their lives, the brothers sneak into the pirate camp and rescue a young hostage held by the crew. During their escape through the dense jungle, they discover that the captive—supposedly a young boy named Bertie—is actually a young woman named Roberta, whose grandfather disguised her for protection.
Knowing that the vengeful pirates under Captain Kuala will track them down, the Robinsons prepare for battle. The family transforms a steep rocky hill into an impenetrable fortress, constructing ingenious defenses including log avalanches, pit traps, makeshift catapults, and buried gunpowder mines. At the same time, a gentle rivalry emerges between Fritz and Ernst as both brothers develop feelings for Roberta.
The climax arrives when the pirates launch an all-out assault on the island. Working as a seamless unit, the family unleashes their clever traps, holding off waves of attackers through sheer tactical brilliance. Just as their ammunition runs dangerously low and the pirates begin to overpower their positions, a British merchant ship commanded by Roberta’s grandfather appears on the horizon, bombarding the pirate fleet with heavy cannon fire and driving the survivors away.
With safety restored, the family faces a life-changing decision. Attached to the paradise they built with their own hands, Mother and Father choose to remain on the island permanently, with their youngest son Francis staying by their side. Fritz and Roberta reveal their plans to marry and remain as well. Meanwhile, Ernst, driven by a desire to pursue higher education, bids his family a warm farewell and boards the ship bound for England to attend university.
