Seeking Persephone, 2026

Seeking Persephone is a 2026 historical romance miniseries directed by John Lyde and based on the novel of the same name by Sarah M. Eden. Starring Ryann Bailey as Persephone Lancaster and Jake Stormoen as Adam Boyce, the Duke of Kielder, the four-part series is set during the Regency era and follows a young woman who enters a marriage of convenience to save her impoverished family. What begins as a practical arrangement soon becomes an emotional journey as she attempts to reach the heart of a mysterious nobleman whose frightening appearance and guarded personality conceal a man deeply afraid of love.

Combining the atmosphere of a classic Gothic romance with themes of sacrifice, emotional healing, and personal freedom, Seeking Persephone explores whether patience and affection can overcome the walls people build to protect themselves from pain.

TRAILER

Plot

Persephone Lancaster belongs to a family facing financial ruin. With her family's future at stake, she must consider an extraordinary solution to their desperate circumstances: marrying Adam Boyce, the mysterious and feared Duke of Kielder. Known for his difficult temperament and intimidating presence, the duke is a man whose reputation precedes him. His scarred face and reclusive nature have contributed to the image of a cold, unapproachable aristocrat, making him a frightening prospect as a husband.

Initially, Persephone refuses the duke's marriage proposal. However, recognizing the seriousness of her family's situation, she eventually accepts his offer. The decision provides her relatives with a chance to escape financial disaster, but it also commits Persephone to a future with a man she barely knows.

Following their marriage, Persephone travels to the duke's remote estate in Northumberland, where she finds herself in an unfamiliar and rather forbidding environment. The imposing castle reflects its master's personality: distant, austere, and seemingly devoid of warmth. Rather than welcoming his new wife into his life, Adam maintains an emotional distance, determined to prevent her from getting too close to him.

Persephone soon realizes that marrying a wealthy duke does not necessarily mean finding happiness. Although her new position offers security, she faces the difficult task of sharing her life with a husband who appears unwilling to build a genuine relationship with her. Adam's cold behavior and repeated rejections leave her uncertain about whether their marriage can ever become anything more than an arrangement of convenience.

Nevertheless, Persephone refuses to surrender completely to the bleakness of her new circumstances. She attempts to find happiness in her surroundings and approaches her husband with patience, kindness, and a willingness to understand him. Rather than judging Adam solely by his frightening reputation, she begins looking for the person hidden beneath his guarded exterior.

As time passes, Persephone catches glimpses of a gentler side of Adam. These moments suggest that his harshness does not tell the whole story and that there may be reasons behind his determination to keep others at a distance. For the first time, she begins to hope that their marriage might develop into something meaningful.

Adam, however, struggles to respond to the emotional connection gradually forming between them. Although he begins to care for Persephone, he remains trapped behind the defenses he has built around his heart. His contradictory behavior leaves her confused, as occasional signs of tenderness are followed by renewed distance. Persephone must therefore contend with the painful possibility that the affection she hopes to cultivate may never be returned in the way she desires.

Their fragile progress is interrupted when news arrives of a deadly naval battle. The report brings devastating uncertainty into Persephone's life, and the situation leaves Adam struggling to understand how to comfort her. Faced with her suffering, the duke discovers that caring for another person is not simply a matter of providing material security. Emotional support requires a vulnerability he has spent much of his life avoiding.

Before he can fully address the growing distance between them, Adam is called away on an urgent rescue mission. His departure separates the couple at a moment when their relationship is beginning to change, forcing them to confront the uncertainty of their circumstances and the feelings they have not yet fully expressed.

Afterward, Adam makes a more deliberate effort to bring Persephone into his world. Recognizing the importance of her family and her need for a place where she can feel at home, he offers to bring her brother to Falstone, his estate. He also plans a ball, hoping to create a happier atmosphere and give Persephone reasons to feel more comfortable in their shared home.

These gestures reveal that Adam's feelings are becoming stronger. His desire to make Persephone happy suggests that she is no longer merely the woman he married to fulfill an arrangement. He has begun to recognize her importance in his life, and his efforts to please her represent a significant change in his behavior.

For Persephone, Adam's growing attentiveness provides renewed hope. The tenderness developing between them suggests that the emotional barriers separating them may finally be weakening. Yet, despite these encouraging moments, she still cannot fully reach her husband's heart. Adam remains reluctant to expose his deepest feelings, and the relationship continues to be marked by uncertainty.

The situation takes a dramatic turn when a terrible riding accident occurs in a dangerous forest. Persephone is seriously injured, and the incident forces Adam to confront the possibility of losing the woman who has gradually become the most important person in his life.

The accident brings his feelings into sharp focus. What he had struggled to acknowledge becomes impossible to ignore: he has fallen deeply in love with Persephone. The thought of losing her reveals just how much his life has changed since their marriage. The woman he once kept at a distance has become someone whose safety and happiness matter more to him than his own emotional defenses.

However, realizing that he loves Persephone does not automatically resolve the conflict within him. Adam must confront a difficult question: what does it truly mean to love someone? His instinct may be to protect her and keep her close, but genuine love cannot be built on fear, control, or the refusal to let another person make her own choices.

Adam consequently faces a painful decision. He must determine whether he is strong enough to open his heart fully and offer Persephone the relationship she deserves, even if doing so means accepting the possibility of being hurt. Alternatively, he must consider whether he can let her go rather than keep her bound to a marriage in which her emotional needs remain unmet.

As their relationship reaches this decisive moment, the future of their marriage depends on Adam's willingness to overcome his fears. Persephone entered his life intending to save her family from financial ruin, never expecting that her greatest challenge would be reaching the heart of a man who had learned to protect himself by shutting others out.

Ultimately, Seeking Persephone is a story about the difference between entering a marriage out of necessity and choosing to love someone freely. Through their difficult journey, Persephone and Adam must discover whether the bond that began as an arrangement can become a genuine partnership built on trust, tenderness, and the courage to be emotionally vulnerable.
